I ran my usual course but just before one of the hills on Custis another runner entered the trail just behind me. Challenge accepted! I increased my speed, up the hills, probably for a good mile. It was tiring but a little bit of competition is nice. And I was faster! He never managed to pass me and I increased the distance between us quite a bit. Felt good, and it resulted in a record time of 44 minutes. Nice.

Nora kept us up from 1.00 am to 3.00 am and we were all quite tired today. Sasha has a bit of a cold also. I took a nap in the afternoon and felt better. Went for a run at 6.30 pm and it was great.

For the first time this season I was wearing my jacket but that wasn't necessary, it was quite pleasant out, if pitch-black.

There was absolutely nobody on the Custis trail, not a single runner or bicyclist. A bit eery.

The Zanes are visiting Jonathan's father this afternoon so after a great morning together we are taking it easy and I went for a nice run.

It was very quiet on the trail and on the streets, everybody is eating turkey. On the Custis trail I saw a bird of prey picking up an animal, perhaps a mouse.

At home I chatted a little bit with Bruce.

Didn't feel great this morning. Slept 7.5 hours but just a little tired. Then we didn't have muesli so I had a sandwich instead which wasn't great either. I was due for a run but figured with the sandwich it wouldn't go well. The first 2 miles felt a bit sluggish indeed but I was actually pretty fast -- 17:30 at the water stop on Custis.

I didn't look at my watch in the end but once on 13th street I decided to go for a sprint. Felt great! Made it in 45 minutes. Feel great now.

I ran my 6 mile course but missed the exit to Harrison to kept running a little too long on Custis, so 0.1 miles extra. Feels great. Weather was excellent so it was a fast run.

Neal Stephenson wrote some of my ever favorite books -- and a few that I didn't care for. It took me a while to figure out which category Reamde falls in. I like the book, though it took me a few hundred pages to get into it.

I guess the biggest thing is not to except too much depth, but just to except a nice action-packed story. The book certainly delivers that and it is nicely up-to-date with technology.

It was pitch dark tonight. We went out at 6.00 pm and it was very dark. Nora didn't mind. Her first run in a few weeks, she enjoyed it. Didn't want to wear the hat. I explained her halfway to put her hands in her pocket but she didn't really listen.

I crossed the 2012 threshold tonight, a good feeling.

I'm at 378 miles now -- one more mile and I'll be at the 2012 year-end mileage. Was a nice run, early in the morning. Saw police on the onramp of 66 at Glebe, probably checking HOV or stickers.
