Terrific book. When I was a kid, I read Contact from the same author. I still remember the location of the book in the library in Middenmeer, just around the corner from the main hallway.

Cosmos is a terrific book, very energizing and hopeful.

The Adventure of English is an enjoyable book about the history of the English language. It gives a good summary of the main events that shaped English.

It is written from a British perspective. The anthropomorphism by the author of treating English as a "person" is a little weird but doesn't interfere too much with the text: "But English was too smart to be pinned down, even by the English".

Author loves language but has a survivors bias in claiming that English was uniquely adapteble and therefore strong.

This book was recommended by Eric.

Hard to believe we have snow again, it being March 3rd already, but it is what it is. Yesterday I went for nice pre-snow run, it was warm.

After Saturday's run, which left me in pain the next day, I took it easy and skipped Tuesday's run (went for a swim instead). Yesterday I ran for the first time and it went well, no pain.

Two weeks ago I ran my 6 mile route and wrote: "it doesn't look like it, but the forecast is for snow". Well, the snow has finally melted and the trails and sidewalks are all clear (except near the pawnshop on Lee Highway). I reset my watch by accident after the run so I don't know my time but the run went well though I felt tired. It's good that I didn't do 7 miles yet. It's sure tempting to start thinking about longer races again!

Update 2/23:

It's good that the snow has melted today because I took Nora out for a run. Sasha wrote that she'd be home a little later and I hadn't ran in New Jersey so the timing worked out nicely.

We were supposed to travel to Secaucus today but it is snowing in New Jersey now so we'll travel tomorrow. That gave me time for another run which is excellent.

Used the same route as on Thursday right after the snow. Today was much less wet: my feet stayed dry.

It doesn't look like it, but the weather forecast is for snow and rain. So I ran a little earlier than usual.

I did my 6.2 miles route over Custis, and it felt great.

The first 10 minutes my hands were pretty cold but as usual I got plenty warm after that. I think it's fair to say that I'm back into my normal shape and I've recovered from the traditional low mileage over the holidays and during our trip to the Dominican Republic a few weeks ago.

The ice on the trails has melted, thanks to two relatively warm and sunny days, and I took Nora for a run tonight. It was still pretty cold, so we used the cover for the running stroller. Nora stayed nice and warm. I wonder if she doesn't get bored?

Run went well, if a little slow. Slowly but surely it seems like I'm getting back in shape after the holidays.
